Great horror movies are extremely hard to come by nowadays, especially with the oversaturated market of movies with non-stop jumpscares and boring plot-lines that seem to barely even scare 6-years olds. Obsession, Directed by Curry Barker, is definitely a standout amongst all of horror.
Obsession doesn’t have any traditional jumpscares nor does it stick to any of the regular horror cliches’ we see in todays media. The usage of sound design in this movie had that movie theater experience surreal. I had to see it twice in the same day, one with my best friend and another with my parents. and both times there were people in the audience yelling at characters, people yelling, “Oh hell no! You better get out of there!”, was one of the best experiences that I have ever had while watching a movie.
So far Obsession has made back $79 million Worldwide, while only having a $750,000 budget. The fact that something was able to look that beautiful with such a small budget! In today’s movie world, you have movies with all of these super bloated budgets that obviously do not need that much money. With a budget like Obsession, we were able to see the beauty of cinema showcased and not have to worry about bad CGI or horrible background sets. You can truly love how much these actors and crew loved cinema and bringing the story of Bear and Nikki to life.
Inde Navarrette who plays Nikki, provided the audience with an absolutely stunning performance where she truly showcased someone who was obsessed! One of the moments that had stuck with me both times, was the flower pot scene. The makeup design with that scene is horrifying and the makeup crew did an absolute amazing job making Nikki look evil and older.

If you are a fan of horror at any spectrum, I can not encourage you enough to go to the theaters and see it before it goes to digital. This movie is something special we have not seen before, and we need movie studios to recognize what will happen when you give amazing directors opportunities to create a project that they are passionate about.
I would also like to mention how Curry Barker went from someone who made skits and bits on Instagram. I remember watching him from “That’s a Bad Idea”, and seeing Curry and Cooper making the most random videos ever. Barker has also been reported to be directing a new Texas Chainsaw, which Barker wants to be similar to the one from 2003. Coming next year, Barker will also be looking to release “Anything But Ghosts”, which follows Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard, acting as con-artist ghost hunters who stage fake hauntings and will at some point encounter real ghosts.
Bottom line, Obsession is definitely a 9/10 movie, only thing that could have made it better, would be if it never ended. Go see this movie 100%!
