Ever since 2021, The Backrooms has been a viral trend of videos that have become popularized due to their “dream core” elements and mystical sounding music. I personally was someone who loved the whole backrooms trend and I was hooked on the idea of someone falling through a wall and being transported to a place where you may never escape.
This idea and premise had become more popularized when Kane Parson’s the director of A24’s Backrooms had gotten some attention when he created his take on the viral videos making a short film that caught the internet’s eyes! Parson’s take on the Backrooms is very reminiscent to what we see in the movie in the sense of there being monsters and the settings as well. A lot of people have the misconception that Kane Parson’s was the creator the Backrooms but in reality it was something already pre-existing with the internet creating their own Wiki that goes over all of the lore.
With Backrooms making $118 million off of a modest $10 million budget, they are already looking into what will be next for Parson’s Backrooms. From certain rumors across the internet, some are saying that they will explore different stories of people falling through to the Backrooms or may continue off of the first one.

As of right now Backrooms sits at a 89% Critic Score on Rotten Tomatoes but a 74% audience score. I always will look at an audience score way before I ever consider the critic score. 9/10 the critics will always over hype a really specific movie when in reality it might just be… decent. I personally was not a fan of it, and I do feel like if I were directing the movie, I would have emphasized more on the found footage element and possibly consider that for the whole filming process. I think having a regular filming style shows the viewer everything that is in front of them, while having a lost-footage vibe, you are able to have more mystery and scare the viewers more easily.
As for part 2, we should expect development to start as soon as possible, while the trend is high! I would not recommend to see this movie in theaters and would probably wait until it comes out on HBO Max or some streaming platform! In my opinion, PASS!
6/10 Movie Score!
